Measuring liquids and reading a thermometer

Get to know the bench: measure 50 mL of water, transfer it and take its temperature.

Objectives

  • Identify a beaker, measuring cylinder and thermometer.
  • Measure a volume of liquid accurately.
  • Transfer a liquid without spilling and record its temperature.

Theory

Volume is read from the bottom of the meniscus with your eye level with the liquid surface. A measuring cylinder is more accurate than a beaker because it is narrower, so the same change in volume gives a bigger change in height.

Procedure

  1. Put on your safety goggles and lab coat.
  2. Place a beaker on the bench.
  3. Place a measuring cylinder on the bench.
  4. Measure 50 mL of distilled water in the measuring cylinder.
  5. Pour the water from the cylinder into the beaker.
  6. Place a thermometer on the bench and measure the temperature of the water.

Precautions

  • Read the meniscus at eye level.
  • Keep the thermometer bulb fully in the liquid and away from the glass.
